What Is a Padel Tennis Court?
Padel tennis has recently become an increasingly popular sport. As the most important alternative reason, especially in pairs, it is a sport that can be played in groups, whether with family or friends.
Padel tennis, although it is called a new sport, its history can be traced back to the 1970s. Padel tennis emerged in Mexico and is mainly played in countries where Spanish culture is dominant.
With the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become a sport that has gained more attention in Turkey and around the world. Padel tennis is a sport that combines squash and tennis. It has similarities and differences to tennis. Our company built padel tennis court systems to play the sport.
Padel Court Dimensions
A padel court must be 10 meters wide and 20 meters long. In this way, each half of the runway consists of a 10m x 10m square. This means that the padel court has two symmetrical parts. Therefore a padel court must have 200 square meters.
Specific measures must also be observed inside the track. There must be a distance of 3 meters between the wall and the line of service. In addition, each track line must have a specific thickness of 5 cm. They must be white or a color that is completely distinguishable from the track surface.
The perimeter of the track is closed by four walls. The height of each wall must be at least 3 meters. Depending on the European type, the side walls may have a stepped rectangular shape with a height of 3 meters and a length of 4 meters.
Funds must have a minimum height of four meters. They can be made of different materials: standard walls, glass or plastic. In addition, the regulation provides for the possibility of using this material for the first meter and metal fencing for the remaining meters.
Three materials are available for the surface: artificial grass, cement or carpet. It's a good thing that there's a bit of special sand on the grass and carpet to make moving around the pitch easier. The color of the surface can be blue, green or umber (manually adjustable).
The padel course also includes access to use it, which is also stipulated in the regulations.
Composition of a Padel Tennis Court
Artificial Grass
Although different types of flooring can be used when building paddle tennis courts, artificial grass is more common due to its properties.
Artificial turf has a number of very important properties: it allows for a slower pace of play and promotes cushioning, which reduces the risk of injury. The silica sand used in the installation contributes to the grip of the shoe, avoids slipping, and provides proper sliding.
In general, it is a more durable floor than other types; it is installed in a floating manner on a rigid pavement and is finished by filling and ballasting silica sand. There are many types of artificial grass; the most commonly used are polypropylene and polyethylene, which are less abrasive than other materials.
To really enjoy it, the materials used must be of high quality and well-maintained. This is why it is advisable to trust a paddle tennis court maintenance company that provides good service and has experience in this type of work.
Padel Net
The expanded mesh must be 10 meters long and between 0.88 and 0.92 meters high.
Each end of the net has two jambs perfectly protected from blows, between which there must be a metal cable with a maximum diameter of 0.01 m.
Access to the Padel Court
Entrances to padel courts must be on both sides or only on one side.
Each opening must have a specific size. If there is only one access on one side, the dimensions must be at least 1.05 x 2.00 meters. On the other hand, if there are two entrances, each hole must have a minimum dimension of 0.72 x 2.00 meters and a maximum dimension of 0.82 x 2.00 meters.
Besides the court interior and passages, another key aspect of padel courts is lighting. Especially when there is no sunlight, you can also play.
Padel Stadium Lighting
A padel court must have at least four lights and these lights must be located outside the court near the side walls.
Spotlights illuminating padel courts must have a minimum height of at least 6 meters. The required minimum lighting power for padel court lighting must be 400-500 lux, which must be doubled if the match is televised.
Here are the most important things you should know about the measurements and dimensions of a regular padel court, and at SYSTURFl we will be happy to explain them to you in order to give you the best information about the sport.
What Are the Characteristics of a Paddle Tennis Court?
Court Size: Compared to traditional tennis courts, classic paddle tennis courts are relatively compact. Measuring 20 meters long and 10 meters wide, it provides a confined space that encourages fast-paced gatherings and exciting games.
Enclosed Walls: Perhaps the most distinctive feature of a paddle tennis court is its transparent walls. These walls, usually made of tempered glass, surround the court from all sides. Transparency allows spectators to watch the game from the outside, and adds an extra layer of strategy to gameplay, as players can use walls for rebounds.
Artificial Grass Surface: The playing surface of a classic paddle tennis court is covered with high-quality artificial grass or artificial turf. This surface provides consistent ball bounce and grip, ensuring players can make precise shots and enjoy a fair game.
Net and Scoring Zone: Similar to traditional tennis, the net sits in the center of the court and divides it in half. Scoring areas are marked on the walls, usually with obvious lines or markings. Score points when the ball hits a wall in a designated area.
Metal Mesh Fences: Around the field, you will often find metal mesh fencing. This protects players and spectators from stray balls while maintaining an open and airy feel to the pitch.
Lighting for Night Games: Many classic paddle tennis courts are equipped with lighting systems to facilitate night games. This feature allows enthusiasts to enjoy the sport anytime, anywhere.
What Is the Difference Between a Padel Court and a Tennis Court?
Court Size and Dimensions
Padel Stadium
Padel courts are generally smaller in size compared to traditional tennis courts. The dimensions of a padel court are 20 meters long and 10 meters wide. These dimensions make a padel court about half the size of a standard tennis court.
The compact size creates a more intimate gaming environment and allows for fast-paced, close communication. This also makes it easy to convert existing tennis courts into padel courts. 1 tennis court can be converted into 3 padel courts, providing greater efficiency for sports clubs.
Tennis Court
Tennis courts, on the other hand, are larger in size. The standard tennis court is 23.77 meters long 8.23 meters wide for singles, and 10.97 meters wide for doubles. The extra space on the tennis court gives players more room to cover, favoring longer games with a greater focus on stamina and agility.
Seine Nets Structure and Environment
Padel Stadium
The playing area on the padel court is surrounded by glass walls and mesh fencing. The glass walls are usually about three meters high and have one notable feature: they can be used for competitions. The closed structure ensures that the ball stays in motion, adding an extra element of strategy to the game.
Mesh fencing combined with glass walls allows spectators to watch the game without interfering with it. There are several options for padel court fencing, some of which offer fewer posts within the glass, allowing for a better viewing experience.
Tennis Court
Traditional tennis courts have no walls or glass structures. Instead, they open up in all directions. The absence of walls enables players to hit powerful shots from any angle, and the ball can cross boundaries, resulting in either a point or a loss.
The openness of the tennis court provides a sense of freedom on the court, requiring players to take charge of the entire playing area. Both court structures are large enough for doubles matches.
Playing Field
Padel Stadium
The padel playing field is made of artificial turf. Artificial turf provides a consistent playing surface and does not require regular maintenance.
SYSTURF's grass is extremely durable, which means it won't need to be replaced for many years, even under high-traffic conditions.
Artificial turf provides a consistent and cushioned playing experience, reducing the risk of injury and allowing cricketers to focus on their game.
Tennis Court
Regular tennis courts have traditionally had surfaces made of clay, grass, or hard court materials such as asphalt or concrete. Clay courts are known for their slow pitches, which favor strong defensive players. Grass courts offer a faster surface that allows for fast hitting and rewards aggressive play. Hard courts are the most common type, offering a medium-paced surface suitable for a variety of playing styles.
The choice between padel tennis and tennis ultimately comes down to personal preference and playing style. However, if you are looking for an exciting and fast-paced game that combines elements of tennis and squash, padel tennis is an excellent choice.
